I love aperture rings when they are not feather light and have the apertures numbered. The aperture ring on my 23 1.4 has a bit more 'feel' to it than the one on my 18-55.

The few times i actually do, i notice it. In the beginning i did accidently turn the aperture ring a bunch of times, but i almost never do these days. I acknowledge that having the ring may make the lenses slightly longer in the barrel (perhaps like the 18mm compared to the 27mm), but even as a lover of small lenses, I'd personally still choose a ring over scroll wheel operation. In the case of the XT1, one can see the key camera settings in a single glance without even turning it on. It also denies what is to me one of the best features of the Fuji system. the 27mm lens is the odd one out in Fuji's lens range and requires a different MO. One chooses a system according to many priorities and learns to live with whichever aperture ring position comes with the choice.Īt least Fuji offers an aperture ring! I'd hate to see them drop aperture rings as on the 27mm and as many other brands have done. People just aren't all going to enjoy the same thing. Debating it is rather like casting preferences between the flat top RF look (like the XE1/2) and the middle EVF position with a hump (like the XT1). Either way has its advantages and disadvantages, adherents and opponents. It seems to me that it either has to be at the back behind the focus and zoom rings (like canon FD, Nikon, Pentax and Samyang) or at the front (like Leica, some Panasonic and the old Olympus OM primes). It isn't very wide either but, because of it's position on the lens, it's easier to grip and turn. The aperture ring is on the front end of the lens, ahead of the focus ring.

The ring works on Panasonic bodies only, so in my case that's only when it's on my GM5. It is, I believe, the only Panasonic M43 lens with an aperture ring. I have the Panasonic-Leica 15mm f/1.7 that I use with my GM5 and E-M10. Also, I have to tilt the X-E2 up to see the aperture markings but, since I look at the aperture setting in the EVF, that is a trivial annoyance. The things I don't like is the aperture ring is not very wide and it's right on top of the lens mount, which makes it harder to grip.

So, I don't have to worry about accidentally changing the aperture. My aperture ring is quite stiff and takes some effort to turn. I just returned to Fuji and bought an X-E2 and the 18mm f/2.0. I can partially do that by placing the lens in auto but then the camera goes to P mode and it is constantly overriding the aperture we dial in. It would be so much better to have the ring at the end of the lenses or at least to be able to command the apperture with one of the main dials. Ergonomically speaking it does not make much sense, that area is where we hold the lens, and rotate zoom/focus, we should not have something as critical and so small in the between. I have already missed a lot of pictures because of not noticing that the F-Stop had changed without wanting. It is small, has a light feedback, it does not take much to move and you barely notice it. It is so easy to move it accidentally while zooming or focusing.

I have to say I hate the aperture ring on the back of the fuji lenses. It's a bit funny when I can set aperture with the rear dial when using the 27mm, but not when using the 18-55mm.Īs for the position, I like it where it is as I'm mostly on the zoom ring, which I prefer to be out front for stability. Bit of a surprise when I look through the viewfinder and see the changed aperture value. I'm with you, the aperture ring on my 18-55mm is too loose and I've moved it by accident several times.
